Canon DR Technology

Canon Amorphous Silicon (a-Si) Flat Panel Sensor

The core technology in all Canon DR Systems is its exclusive Amorphous Silicon (a-Si) Flat Panel Sensor, which consists of a precision amorphous silicon metal-insulator- semiconductor (MIS) sensor and TFT (Thin Film Transistor) array. For more than a decade, Canon has used a-Si technology in millions of facsimile machines, scanners and solar-energy panels.

This proven technology is now combined with TFT array, which produces a highly stable output signal. The result is a reliable and durable Sensor that provides the highest quality images without the time and costs involved with film or cassette handling. Benefits include:

  • Widest Imaging Area: The Canon Amorphous Silicon Flat Panel Sensor currently covers the widest imaging area in the industry (up to 17” x 17”).
  • High Resolution: A 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion process converts the raw image to digital form producing a high-resolution, high-contrast 4,096 grayscale image.
  • Quick Preview and Refreshment Cycle: Access time of the preview image is within three seconds after X-ray exposure and Sensor refreshment time is only six seconds for the next exposure.
  • High Sensitivity: The Sensor’s high degree of sensitivity allows X-ray dosage to be minimized despite the Sensor’s small pixel pitch.
  • Reliable and Durable: Canon stands by its proven technology with a one-year standard warranty.

Canon Control Station

All Canon DR systems offer convenient system management through the Control Station consisting of an LCD Operation Panel and a Control PC. Over 750 raw images can be stored in the Control Station, which can transmit images to any industry standard PACS workstation. From a PACS workstation, captured images can be sent right away to desired network locations, such as remote viewing workstations, electronic image archive, or printer.

The LCD Operation Panel provides image preview as well as all the setup for imaging technique, patient demographics and image distribution. It features a flat screen that is easy to mount on the wall.

The Control PC is responsible for system management including image processing, temporary hard-disk storage, and network image distribution.

Streamlined Workflow
Canon DR Systems provide a streamlined workflow that leads to faster exams and higher patient throughput.

Here’s how it works
A session begins by entering patient data into the LCD Operation Panel either manually or via on-line access to RIS. Next, exposure conditions are selected to match the targeted anatomical area. In less than three seconds after x-ray exposure, the preview image will appear on the display allowing the operator to quickly confirm body position, exposure, and other factors. The image can then be sent to a network destination—such as a viewing workstation, picture archive, or printer—via the DICOM 3.0 interface. There is virtually no wait before the systems are ready to capture the next image.

Networking Capabilities

Canon DR systems are compliant with DICOM 3.0 networking standards and can be smoothly integrated into various networks. Canon DR Systems are designed to provide rapid communication of X-ray data between multiple sites.

Images can be readily transferred to designated network devices such as PACS, storage devices, or printers in addition to physicians and healthcare professionals working in other locations. In addition, connection to RIS (Radiography Information System) allows administrators and radiologists to efficiently share data.

Canon’s expanded networking capabilities combined with a streamlined workflow can significantly increase productivity in the X-ray room and beyond.
