Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the world. But since heart diseases can often be prevented, the American Heart Association has developed guidelines for heart disease prevention.

People can assess their risk with the Framingham risk calculator, which can tell you if you are at a high, moderate or low risk for a heart attack.

Then they can adopt a strategy for prevention, such as lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, sugar and keeping a healthy body weight. People at high risk might require medications such as an ACE inhibitor, aspirin, a statin, beta blocker, fibrate and niacin.

They should stop smoking, increase physical activity and eat a heart healthy diet. Then we can say aloha to heart diseases.
