The health information technology (HIT) juggernaut is promisingor threateningto ram medicine into the 21 century, leaving behind hapless private physicians who arent wired in. Practices with insufficient revenue to afford the expensive systemsor practices that cant or wont attract HIT subsidies from hospitals or other behemothsare expected to wither and die. The Bush Administration and members of Congress from both parties believe that HIT, of the interoperable kind, is the answer to medical errors and overwhelming costs. The interest groups that dominated the Clinton Task Force on Health Care Reform now appear to own the government.
