Synopsis

The U.S. infant mortality rate increased from 6.8 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2001 to 7.0 in 2002, the first increase in more than 40 years. From 2001 to 2002 infant mortality rates increased for very low birth weight infants as well as for preterm and very preterm infants. Although infant mortality rates for very low birth weight infants increased, most of the increase in the infant mortality rate from 2001 to 2002 was due to a change in the distribution of births by birth weight.
