Ophthalmologists often use an exophthalmometer, an instrument which measures the distance from the front of the eye to the back of the eye socket. Existing exophthalmometers are not always 100% reliable. This is due - in short - to the fact that the value that the exophthalmometer measures depends on the position of the person taking the measurement and as a result, it is difficult to get reliable and valid results.

The solution

Professor M.Ph. Mourits, a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Amsterdam and also an ophthalmologist at the Utrecht University Medical Center, has designed an
accurate exophthalmometer.

From design to production

In 2006, Professor Mourits - on behalf of an important market party in the medical sector - gave a presentation of the product at De Koningh Medical Systems. Since the design was very large and heavy, De Koningh made a smaller, lighter and more cost-efficient version. The concept was ready within three weeks. Through close consultation with the professor and the market party, De Koningh produced a prototype based on the Professor Mourits’ idea.

New market: United States

The first models were produced by mid-2007. All the plastic components for the next series of products will be made with the aid of injection moulding. This is cost efficient, since it can be used to make a large number of instruments. The first series of products are currently being marketed and used by a number of ophthalmologists. Thanks to the success of the exophthalmometer, it will shortly be introduced in the United States.

Exophthalmometer?

‘Ex’ means ‘toward the outside’ in Latin and ‘ophthalmos’ is Greek for ‘of the eye’.
‘Exophthalmometer’, therefore, stands for ‘instrument to measure the outside of the eye’.
