Positive Displacement pumpsmechanically displace a known volume of liquid so that the pumps, running at a constant speed, positively displace a liquid volume at a fixed rate. Positive Displacement pumpscan be subdivided into two main categories; reciprocating pumpsand rotary pumps.
Within the two main categories, the pumps may operate by means of various pumping techniques. Johnson Pump offers Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pumps as reciprocating pump type and Flexible Impeller, Internal Gear and Rotary Lobe pumpsas rotary pumptypes.
APPLICATION FIELD OF POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT PUMPS
Generally speaking, Positive Displacement pumps` capacity is proportional to speed, they are reversible, self-priming and can pump low to high viscosities. Among Johnson Pump`s most important segments can be mentioned:
- Food and Beverage
For all types of hygienic applications and applications demanding gentle handling
- Pharmaceutical
Hygienic and gentle product handling with extremely precise dosing
- Chemical
Handling of aggressive and hazardous chemicals, slurries and pastes
- Petrochemical
Asphalt stations and bitumen products as well as fuels and oils and lubrication
- Pulp & Paper
Aggressive chemicals and abrasive sludge, fillers, inks

PUMPS: TopAir
Air Operated Double Diaphragm pumpsare widely used in most types of industries for the handling of a variety of products. It is a truly multipurpose pumpand the wide range of applications is the main reason for its growing popularity.
TopAir-series
The TopAir-series is one of the most complete lines of Air Operated Double Diaphragm pumps on the market. With eight sizes up to 800 l/min in a wide range of material combinations we can offer pump solutions for all types of industries.
TopAir will pump any liquid which flows or moves through a pipe - from clear water and volatile liquids to highly viscous and abrasive or chemically aggressive liquids.
Some examples of media handled by TopAir: clays, glazes, acids, alkalis, latex, solvents, cement slurry, sump and pit drainage, electroplating solutions, milk of lime, oil, polishing slurries and pastes, varnish additives, coal sludge, grouting motor, resins, wood preservative, glue, pulp and paper slurry, ink, petroleum, benzene, ointment, alcohol, waste water, sewage.
FLEXIBLE IMPELLER PUMPS
Johnson Pump has a long and broad experience of the design and manufacture offlexible impeller pumps. Our pumps have always stood for innovation and quality with strong emphasis on the flexible impeller itself – the main reason for the successful growth of Johnson Pump from the start some 30 years ago. Typical is the latest development – the first flexible impeller pump in the world produced, tested and certified according to the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) milk compound formulation. The formulation comprises all types of foodstuffs.
Today Johnson Pump offers one of the market`s most extensive flexible impeller pump programmes.
DC Motor-Driven Pumps
These 12/24 V DC close-coupled pumps are ideal for battery operated applications. The series comprises four sizes – three in bronze and one in a thermoplastic material and they cover flows from 15 to 55 l/min.
Typical applications
Sampling, refuelling of diesel, spraying of fertilisers and pesticides, watering of road rollers cylinder, draining of sumps and tanks, wash-down, draining/filling of aquariums, street sweeper water spraying and many others.
Flexible impeller pump (FIP)-series
Flexible impeller pumps - five different sizes
- Polished stainless steel for hygienic applications
- Industrial stainless steel for standard, non-sanitary applications
- Bronze for non-corrosive duties
Multipurpose Bronze Pumps
The bronze series of flexible impeller pumps comprises two series of bronze pedestal pumps -8 and -3000. Both series have stainless steel shafts and maintenance-free double ball bearings.
Typical applications
These pumps handle a wide range of liquids for transfer, circulation and sampling. Oils, fertilisers, water, light chemicals, solids in suspension, polymers, sewage, coolants, concrete additives, cutting oils, brines, diesel, pesticides are only some examples of liquids being handled. Also many OEM applications.
Bronze Clutch-Driven Pumps
The clutch-driven series of pumps comprises four sizes ranging from 1`` to 2.1/2`` port sizes. These pumps are normally vehicle-mounted and the pumps are activated only when required. All four sizes are available with electromagnetic clutches while two sizes, 1`` and 2``, are also available with manual clutch.
Typical applications
These are typical multipurpose pumpswidely used in agricultural and general utility pumping, e.g., irrigation, wash-down, draining and fire-fighting but also for fertilisers and pesticides.
Internal Gear Pumps
Gear pumpsare used in all types of manufacturing industries for the transportation of both thin and thick liquids, from chocolate to diesel fuel. Our gear pumpshave sturdy design, offering high reliability as well as long life.
Johnson Pump`s gear pump design is based on an internal idler gear rotating inside of a larger rotor. Internal gear pumps are robust, give an even flow, handle both low and high viscosity products, are capable of high pressure and are self-priming.
Johnson Pump manufactures the TopGear-series of internal gear pumps; with the TG L-range for low viscosity - high volumetric efficiency, TG G-range for general purpose and the TG H-range for high demanding applications.
Rotary Lobe Pumps
The original design of therotary lobe pumpgoes back to the early 40`s and has since then been further developed and improved. Johnson Pump has long experience in rotary lobe pumps. Market knowledge and appreciation of customer needs have been used to improve the existing rotary lobe pump concept with new features and customer benefits.
Rotary lobe pumps are easy to clean and have gentle product handling characteristics. They contain few cavities, which reduces the risk of bacterial growth and makes them particularly suitable for the transport of sensitive fluids – from glue to whole strawberries.
Rotary lobe pumps are suited for continuous operation and are used in industries such as
- Food and Beverages
- Pharmaceutical
- Chemical
- Cosmetics
- Pulp & paper
Johnson Pump offers two models of rotary lobe pumps; TopLobe, a tri-lobe rotor pump, which is designed to handle most applications in today`s processing industries and TopWing, which is a heavy duty bi-wingedrotor pumpdesigned for the most demanding applications, with optimal efficiency, but without any compromise when it comes to hygiene.
