UEMS has a number of bodies and objectives such as defending the status of medical specialists and ensuring their proper training.
The history of UEMS includes the basic principles of training of European medical specialists, harmonising specialist trainings and criteria for their recognition, and improving quality of specialist medical care.
The three-tiered membership structure is composed of organisations representing medical specialist doctors, bodies which are full members, associate members or observers.
UEMS policies, charters and position papers include European Health Policy Forum, medical specialist practice, Charter on Continuing Medical Education in the EU and doctors` directive.
The Charter on Continuing Medical Education helped form the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and Postgraduate Continuing Professional Development for promoting continuing medical education.
